John has dedicated his career to advising and problem solving for high net worth clients and businesses.

His expertise often involves solving business ownership and succession problems, assisting clients with formulating their estate, tax and insurance planning, and developing and implementing strategies for wealth preservation.  John also is counsel for private equity firms active in M&A, particularly around financial services businesses.

John has an international client base and is widely recognized as a long term trusted advisor for high net worth businesses and families.  His clients most commonly describe him as “practical” and “strategic”, and John prides himself in being able to quickly get clients to the right solution.

John’s family business practice has included succession planning advisory for more than 100 closely held businesses and wealth preservation planning for high net worth individuals, which involves close work with the firm’s Tax Trusts & Estates practice in the formation of family partnerships, trusts and other vehicles.

John’s M&A practice has involved more than 200 transactions spanning multiple industries, with a concentration of more than 40 transactions in the Financial Services industry, including the sale or acquisition of wealth management firms, trust companies, ETFs and other financial services sector companies.  John’s M&A practice includes representation of multiple private equity firms.

John has served as a member of the board of directors of multiple privately owned companies and is an active private equity investor.  John has also served on the boards of 6 nonprofits and has been board chair of 2 nonprofits.

  • Representation of family owned businesses in complex legal and tax planning, structuring gifting plans to dynasty trusts, SLATs, intentionally defective grantor trusts, donor advised funds and other vehicles which  effectively remove assets from the taxable estates of founders.
  • Representation of 75+ business founders in developing succession plans to evaluate options of continued family ownership, ESOP, sale to strategic or private equity buyers, selection of investment bankers, and other readiness aspects of sale and succession planning.
  • Representation of 100+ privately owned businesses in sale processes working with pre-sale exit planning preparation, identification of investment banking and quality of earnings providers, pre-sale tax efficiency planning, and working with the firm’s M&A lawyers to smoothly run the sale process.
  • Representation of numerous clients in structuring legally permissible asset protection strategies, including use of limited partnerships, domestic and foreign situs trusts and other techniques.
