Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced that employees who are out of work due to COVID-19 may be eligible for unemployment compensation benefits under the following circumstances:

  • Their employer temporarily closes or goes out of business because of COVID-19;
  • Their employer reduces their hours because of COVID-19;
  • They have been told not to work because their employer feels they may get or spread COVID-19; or
  • They have been told to quarantine or self-isolate, or live/work in a county under government-recommended mitigation efforts.

The Department is waiving the usual waiting week period, and as such, employees may receive benefits for their first week of underemployment or unemployment. Please contact our firm’s employment law attorneys for guidance on handling coronavirus related workplace issues.
