A Healthcare Power of Attorney may be one of the most important documents a person executes and has in effect, especially for a young adult.

Many families plan for Mom and Dad with the possible creation of trusts for adult children, but often no specific planning is done for the young adults.

Consider a young child away from home in college. A medical emergency arises. Without a Healthcare Power of Attorney naming Mom or Dad, the medical decisions will fall to the judgment of the medical staff. The doctors and hospital personnel will likely not share any medical information with the parents. If the parents wish to maintain control of the decision-making process, they must be given the authority to do so in the form of the Medical Power of Attorney.

It is vital for families to consider this important matter.
