Metz Lewis strongly recommends that if any parent has children age 18 or older who are not married, they should get their children to sign a Medical Power of Attorney (POA) so that a healthcare provider is authorized to share information with the parent in the event of an emergency.

Without the POA, the HIPAA rules will likely prevent the healthcare provider from sharing any medical information with parents. We have found this matter to be a critical issue for families.
